Gaynor Batty was the much treasured daughter of George and June, and a much loved big sister to Donna, Peter and Melissa. She lived in Sunderland, and attended the same school as myself back in the 80's, St Anthony's RC school.
Gaynor was a year or two below me, but she always used to come up and chat to me in the school yard. She was so friendly and loving and had a wonderful sense of humour. I guess I had a soft spot for her and took her under my wing a little and I enjoyed her chats. She had lots of friends who adored her. She was so vibrant and just had such a sparkle about her! She was so full of life and had so much that she could have gone on to do!
Sadly Gaynor's life was tragically taken from her! She was raped and strangled after visiting Crowtree Leisure Centre on 20th December 1988. She was only 14 years old! I remember Sister Aelred my head of year, announced what had happened in assembly after we returned to school after the Christmas holidays. Everyone was devastated that this could happen to her.
Her beaten body was found on the top level of a Sunderland multi-storey car park and a twenty year old local man was arrested and charged with her murder and given 20 years in prison. He has since tried to appeal for release. Gaynor's family will always be sentenced to a lifetime of pain.
Along with many, Gaynor's family are appealing to many to sign the Enough is Enough petition for "Life to mean Life"!
Recently in January this year, my brother-in-law David McCully also had his life cruelly snatched away so I feel so passionately about the cause!
